The reception series gives more weight to the concave voids, accenting emptiness, space and silence. The sculptures are born from explorations into structural balance, human nature, physiology and the beauty of life/nature. I start in the sketchbook developing ideas and searching for dynamic forms that possess character and a deep sense of nature. I elaborate on past forms, introduce new concepts and mix ideas during the exploration stage. Reception No.2 in Red Cedar uses four pieces of wood planed flat and joined together with glue and clamps. I use a hand plane to flatten the sides and a high precision square to check for true. I consider growth ring orientation and colouration when joining pieces. A variety of hand tools are used to make this. They include gouges, chisels, saws, a drawknife, a rasp and a file. The sculpture is smooth finished and waxed for an enriched colour and sheen. It's a freestanding form and can be viewed from all angles. These sculptures look great grouped together, in lines or by themselves. When putting them in groups they interact with each other forming new aesthetic possibilities.
