In the still life series I am examining the nature of the still life itself. It is an attempted revision of the classical models of painting. Objects have always stood in as the subject of classical still life painting. In my examination the contents become the subject and no longer objects. The series title is meant to be known as "life held still". Life stopped in time, parts of life in isolation. Through science, philosophy and any number of other human pursuits, individual aspects can be successfully quantified and studied outside of the whole within which they exist. The idea roots back as far as humankind goes through history and culminates in the ideas of Darwinism, classificiation, and evolutionary origination theory. The coinciding era brought forth the germination of virtually all modernist ideas, inside and outside of art and art theory. The ideas that species, environmental forces can be studied named and assessed separate from the rest of natural existence bears no broad difference from the idea of deconstruction in painting. In art such an idea is far less difficult than in other arenas, as the artist can always be said to simply be freely creating. Art has never required the basis other endeavors seek in order to legitimize their corresponding theory. Now in reviewing this history, this series of works confronts the idea that parts can be held apart from their whole, manipulated at will, and asks what effect that has on society now that we have seen a century or more of man at work picking apart nature to it's very atomic core. The still life series attempts to examine all manner of effects of the human's penetration into this notion, and all the ill effects of it that have accrued over time and have largely been ignored in the field of theory itself.
