I was INSPIRED to paint Riptide while standing on the balcony of my Ft. Lauderdale studio. The balcony is adjacent to and closed off from the studio by glass doors. While out on the balcony looking inward, I realized I had come upon a strange new place. Indeed, I had entered and was “swimming” in a sea of the unknown. Here I could clearly see the ocean and sky (reflected on the glass) intermingling with the studio and bedroom spaces beyond, including another set of double glass doors, and an armoire, This shimmering, compacted, hysterically confusing yet luscious image of land, sea and air superimposed upon one another enchants me to this day and infuses my work. I hope that VIEWERS will be caught in the current, a riptide if you will, and swept away from the safety of "everyday." and pulled into the enchanting and exotic sea of the unknown. TECHNICAL MATTERS: I used acrylic paint into which I pressed whole and crushed shell bits to enhance the ancient architecture. I used Gesso over the paint in spots to give the structures an antique patina. The fountain water and breaking waves have tiny pearls pressed in the paint which causes it to sparkle. The pelican's beak is studded with gems for texture and his nest has gold twine pressed into the paint. Riptide has been awarded both the Best in Show and Popular vote awards by the Broward Art Guild, Ft. Lauderdale. It is framed in a weathered wood and silver frame with a gold interior edge and is shipped ready to hang.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
