Resilience This painting is part of a series called CurrentMe, a play on the word currently. CurrentMe in its entirety expresses where I am and what I am doing in my life these days. Many of the paintings in this collage were finished during Covid19 isolation period. They are reflective in nature of what I try to understand and live by, mixed in with some winks to my other work. Each painting is 24” x 24” acrylic on canvas. Resilience 2020 24” x 24” acrylic on canvas It is the mental reservoir of strength that people are able to call on in times of need to carry them through without falling apart. It can be developed and both focused & peaceful. Many factors determine resilience—such as genetics, early life experiences, and luck. But specific resilience-building skills can be learned including breaking free of negative thought patterns, pushing against catastrophizing, and looking for upsides when faced with setbacks. After experiencing trauma, many people find deeper psychological and spiritual meaning in their lives, known as post-traumatic growth. It doesn't always occur immediately after the trauma, and the individual may still experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, or flashbacks. I read an article in the New Yorker that said: “resilient people tend to meet the world on their own terms.” They are autonomous and independent, seek out new experiences, and have a “positive social orientation.” “Though not especially gifted, these people use whatever skills they have effectively,” and perhaps most importantly, the resilient have what psychologists call an “internal locus of control”: they believe that they, and not their circumstances, affect their achievements.
