Overview Effect Print

The Overview Effect refers to a psychological phenomenon experienced by some astronauts as they see the fragile earth traveling in the vast darkness of space. The need to unite across the invisible national borders to protect the life contained in the paper-thin atmosphere becomes overwhelmingly apparent. I have been fascinated by human space travel as long as I can remember, and I look for opportunities to use astronauts as subjects whenever I can. Looking through photos of NASA EVA's (spacewalks) I found a few perfect photos that could be made partially abstract with my burn technique to create a visual metaphor for the physiological shift that so many astronauts have described. This work combines many of my favorite motifs: peak experience, the overlap of realism and abstraction, and the extremity of human adventure. The painting is on heavy duty stretcher bars and heavy raw canvas. Ready to hang.
