“I believe what draws me to these particular archetypes lie in their exaggerated nature, which in turn is understandably occasioned by their idiosyncratic functions - demanding a set of visual properties capable of instantaneous conveyance of information. The soldier is a generic representation of a soldier and as such is designed to allow for his vocation to be immediately understood by his appearance. However, there is not a single soldier in the world that looks like him. He is only the median, comprised of the most frequently reoccurring aesthetic properties of any real soldier. Additionally, the computer-generated photo on which the figure is based, does not even feature a gun. Nevertheless by, sheer connotational force produced by his outfit and posture (suggesting a gun) the potential implement of weaponry is inadvertently proven redundant and we still recognise both him and his profession. Conversely, the manga maid represents a tendency within the anime and manga culture (such as “Attack on Titan” and “Seven Deadly Sins”) to situate their pseudo European/American/western characters within what is only a superficially potent European-esque backdrop. Conclusively, each character possesses the cosmetic qualities necessary to convey, at a mere glance, their socio-economic status, vocation, geological and historical context whilst totally omitting any trace of genuine authenticity. Though perhaps obvious to the viewer; the juxtaposition of these very specific and highly caricatured models, may suggest a representation of male and female gender roles. However it has never been my intention to address or attempt to tackle issues related to this topic. Instead I am merely interested in what I consider apt instances of simulacra. In order to create a feeling of overstimulation of information, which relates to the over-all concept I am currently exploring, I manipulated the soldier into an anamorphic anaglyph, skewing his proportions so that he should only appear proportionally correct from a certain point of view. This quality will of course, likely never be appreciated due to the size and anatomy of the work, but also the distortion caused by his colour-split nature which surely prohibits any invitation to think there is more to the figure than an abstracted form. Finally it should not be ignored that in making this painting, I am also tempting to re-create kernel elements of two vastly different cultural staples, neither of which I am particularly familiar with, thus adding another uncannily suitable oxymoronic quality to this work: a European individual superficially depicting an inherently eastern asian tradition of superficially depicting European cultures.”

At the moment, my artistic work bounds in notions related to contemporary experiences of mass media, information excess and authenticity. As my creative outlet evolves, I hope to learn more about film editing, 3D rendering and game development. My literary work tend to reflect similar interests, but is perhaps particularly concerned with information excess.
