About The Artwork

The floor of this work is scattered with multi-colored pearls, portraying the creations of nature acquired over a long time through patience and persistence. Pearls are perceived as something rare and beautiful, and here they serve as a metaphor for the mother earth itself – the creation of earth and its complex ecosystem filled with beautiful species was an extremely rare and valuable event. In the center, a rabbit is shaped in form of a delft-blue, porcelain sculpture; a depiction of humans’ predilection of controlling and meddling with nature in their own selfish and unilateral manner. This notion is reproduced by the artificial sphere on the right, illustrating the earth itself as having become etiolated and having lost its natural iridescence due to humanity. However, the significant difference between the sizes of this “humanized” pearl and the natural pearl on the very left highlights the invincibility of nature, implying a sense of karma, as our fate will ultimately be a result of our interventions with nature. Despite the aesthetically pleasing nature of pearls, their formation is actually a part of the defense mechanism of mollusk against threatening stimuli such as parasites. Here, a parallel is drawn between humanity and “threatening stimuli”. Nature’s resistance against human activities is presented as the hummingbird flying and rising amongst vividly colored tulips that contrast against the bleak concrete background. This piece was made in hope that in the near future, we will learn to co-exist with nature harmoniously without harming either party.

In my work I like to tell stories. Whether they be inspired from conversations with friends, my own experiences, or fragments from the news, I like to rewrite them in my own words and capture them as a painting. I often incorporate flowers into my art as they help me portray a myriad of social issues depending on the context of the painting and to further highlight on the fragility and transience of life. My artistic style is fluid with frequent use of rich colours, creating an illusionary image that looks beautiful from a distance. But nothing is perfect from close-up. By introducing subtle contravening factors, I like to call attention to urgent social themes that preoccupies the minds of many people and voice the collective troubles of the modern world.
