About The Artwork

Viewed from above Detroit is one of the most lopsided urban sprawls in the world. It is exceptional in shape and health. This painting represents the decay, the root cause and presents a possible solution and future. Through the middle of the painting is a border reading, "Do Not Divide Me" the city's voice calling mention to the USA-Canada border which segments Greater Detroit. To the north is Detroit, Michigan with the red and white lines representing its current state, large and hollowed. To the south is Windsor, Ontario with white lines representing its current state, a village in comparison with Detroit. Over an abstract representation of Detroit I painted a potential future for Detroit were the USA-Canada border removed or muted. To the north the blue lines represent renewed growth in and around Detroit. In the south, red lines represent the profound mega-economic potential still held in Ontario. A pessimist might say Detroit is lopsided and dying. The optimist would recognize the city is half born with much left to be seen.

I am a scientist and artist. My hand-painted, abstract cities represent the Urban Organism, a biological interpretation of urbanisation. My cities are imagined. If a real location is painted, it is an idealised vision of the future, a case study in urbanisation. The pieces featured here do not represent my full body of work. You're seeing archival artwork only.
