This work is part of the "Celestial Confinement" series, which focuses on religious architecture and iconography. However, with this piece, unlike previous ones in the series, it does not represent a particular place but is a combination of themes related to "living waters." In Christain religions, in order to be saved, one must be baptized. Particular sects believe in baptism by immersion, which must take place in a pool of water. Mormonism takes this concept further by also having its members be baptized in temple baptismal fonts by proxy for people who have died. When a dam reaches a low water stage in which it can no longer generate power, it is called "dead pool." These two concepts coincide in this piece which questions the viability of dams and religious power. If one literally removes the water from dams, or it dries up over time, it becomes useless in purpose - a failed construction. If one removes the belief from institutional religions, they also remain powerless. Please not this piece uses metallic paint with can vary in color depending on lighting. As it is a work on paper, it has delicate sides that may be reinforced by archival tape.

I grew up in the American Southwest, exposed to desert landscapes and modern architecture. My father, a civil engineer, took me on tours of jails and prisons in my youth simultaneous to my religious, celestial grooming in enclosed institutions. This exposure to vast landscapes and constrained, invasive dwellings continues to shape my artistic career. I am intrigued by the contradiction of being in a place yet not being the place, that there is always a link and separation between structure and freedom.
