Few years ago a call for artists were made to create artwork conveying their views on Brixton, London, for a group exhibition. As I have loved and lived in Brixton for 25 years, I felt compelled to join. Instead of resorting to do the artwork in a canvas, I decided to look for inspiration on found objects in the streets of Brixton. When I came across a set of used hubcaps abandoned in the street, I immediately thought they would be the perfect canvas to depict what this vibrant and fast changing district is to me. Always in motion and moving forwards. I was also inspired from the stained glass windows we can see at Catholic Churches; these were important tools in teaching Christian beliefs to the people since in the Middle Ages, not only the church was the centre of learning, but there were few books, and only a handful of people could read. I also wanted people to lear about Brixton, its multicultural vibrancy, people and costumes; to try and strip it from the bad reputation it had for long and give it the credit it deserved it. In this particular work, I convey the multiculturalism patent in Brixton by the great number of different religious buildings within a short radius. Fortunately, something that happened as Brixton is now a thriving district.

My name is Pilar Camino Alcon, aka Piluca, I was born in Madrid and have lived in Brixton, London, for the past 21 years. It was from a very early age that a felt an unstoppable drive to create, a feeling that has stuck with me ever since. Back in Spain, I studied Law at University but it was only after coming to London on a summer holiday that I found my calling. This is when my life changed as I made the firm decision to pursue my passion. The feeling of doing what I loved was just overwhelming. I enrolled on a two- year foundation course in Art & Design at Lambeth College and then went on to study Fine Art at Kingston Univeristy. I express myself as an individual by conveying very personal statements using art as my preferred medium, unique in every way. Each piece of artwork I make, speaks a thousand words from my inner world. My style is me in the sense that like me, it is constantly evolving, changing and absorbing. I can be very meticulous and I can be spontaneous in the techniques and materials that I use, (I like to up-cycle and often use free materials salvaged from art transport cases from @Martinspeedrecycling for my projects). I could never limit myself to one style, surface or place. Everything is a canvas for me. Being a mother to two beautiful children has made me even more determined to succeed as an artist in a society where it’s indoctrinated that you can only excel at one or the other, but not both simultaneously. I hope my work touches people the same way it touches me when I create it, and gives them some joy and motivation, whether is for personal or social purposes.
