About The Artwork

Imbokodo is a Zulu word that loosely translates to a stone used for crushing or grinding. On August 9, 1956, a song emerged from a woman-led protest; titled: 'Wathint' abafazi, wathint' imbokodo' (You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock). Lyrically, the song mirrored the courage and resilience of the woman that marched to the Union Buildings to stand against the Apartheid laws. Since then, mbokodo has been associated with the strength of women in South Africa. While the origins of the term mbokoto stem from acts of rebellion, heroism and strength, it has become problematic. Women do not have to be strong, at least all the time. Women do not have to 'hold the fort'. The series Mbokoto celebrates the strength, beauty and softness of three influential women in my life: my maternal and paternal grandmothers and mother. The pieces are informed by memory, nostalgia and curiosity and admiration. In the purest sense, abstraction was a means to uncover and rediscover my physical, emotional and sacred connection with these mbokodos, namely Nothende, Maureen and Hynceith.
