This work belongs to my series is called, “Muddled,” in which I attempt to delineate pain, shock, and glimpses of hope and bliss living through today with all the confusion, fast changing culture, concerns involving our environment and safety, disappearing civility and decency – overall, unsettled state of being. While recognizing the apparent ailments of our time, I also wanted to dedicate this series to finding silver lining in all this, and that time’s precious and there’s surprising joy if we’re willing to look for it. This series is my endeavor to perceive events and things from multidimensional way; for me, this means recognizing and accepting that light and dark exist simultaneously and that one cannot exist without the other. In this particular piece, for example, I wanted to earnestly express just sheer darkness and confusion living through our current society. Too fast of changes and too many opinions. All vociferous and entitled. This piece directly speaks to the difficulties in navigating this tricky terrain and sometimes outright dangerous environment. In terms of process, I first layered several pieces of paper and glued them together, and peeled the layers off once the canvas surface dried.

Young makes abstract paintings with paper. At the core of her practice, she explores the concept of impermanence as it relates to life, and the beauty of such mercuriality and unpredictability embedded in the life form. Techniques and process are key to expressing her intention as she unearths the essence of the theme of ephemerality by peeling away colored paper that was first meticulously layered and copiously built up. She is inspired by this process of building and removing intricate layers in order to reveal what is underneath and between – birthing something entire new from the ashes of destruction. In her body of work, melding her past experiences and passion together, Young combines elements from art, design, and craft. Young received her BA in Philosophy from Occidental College, and post graduate studies in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design. Her paintings have been exhibited and placed by galleries and collectors throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
