Forest Nymph Sculpture

The sculpture represents a stylized figure of a naked girl sitting on the edge of a cliff. The figure has no head and no legs below the knees. The arms are of unusual length, which is typical of mythical creatures. The girl's torso is curved to the right, her arms are dynamically outstretched, creating the impression of instability. It seems that the nymph girl is about to flap her wings and take off. The figure is made from plum root and is not covered with anything in order to preserve the matte structure characteristic of living skin. The absence of a head is a conditionally symbolic expression of detachment from the physical world and being in the fabulous space of myth. The rock on which the figure sits is made of beech. The natural surfaces of the split beech have been preserved with all the features of a large branch branching from the trunk. The rock was heavily fired and brushed with a soft wire brush, followed by finishing with fine-grit sandpaper. The rock is double coated with polyurethane varnish and has a strong glossy sheen, which contrastsly emphasizes the tenderness and smoothness of the lines of the nymph’s figure. The rock is mounted on a stand made of beech slab. The stand has a rough texture with chain saw marks, which creates a resemblance to ripples in the water and makes the figure appear to be sitting on a rock above the water. The stand is massive to maintain stability with such a strong slope of the rock. It is covered with two layers of high-quality acrylic varnish.
