As an artist I’m drawn to subjects that present an aesthetic of balance and harmony both in form, light and texture. Essentially exercises in composition, I liken my work to the haiku. The attempt to capture a singular moment, both emotional and temporal, a single moment of tranquilly, that may, like the haiku, also contain tension and explore what lies between tension and peace. The process behind my work is deeply intuitive, often beginning with a simple feeling of ‘rightness’, the sense of ‘pull’ towards a subject that almost unconsciously holds the above mentioned themes. This evolves organically as I work, being drawn to the texture and form of a certain subject, can lead me, almost like a game of Chinese whispers, to the next and and so on; each subject slightly changing in the process. Ultimately, my goal as an artist is to create an image of balanced form, light, texture and weight but also stir emotion, and invite the viewer to find their own sense of meaning in what would also be an instinctive reaction to the piece.
