This Beautiful World was painted in 2020 during the height of the global pandemic. Michael Rich views his work as way finders to a more hopeful and beautiful world. Even in the most unsettling of times, the artist's response is one of beauty. This is a particularly good example of the gestural, abstract style that Michael Rich has cultivated as a response to the elements of landscape and the natural world. Rich is often inspired by the British painter, JMW Turner who portrayed the sea and sky with expressive force, as well as Willem DeKooning who used the landscapes of Long Island as a springboard for sweeping, gestural abstraction.
