The painting was made without the brush touching the canvas. Paint was ejected or flung from the brush but in a very thoughtful and careful way. Abstract Careful-ism - a whimsical term I invented to describe how the expressionism has been filtered and refined and achieves a calmness and subtlety rarely seen in this genre. It was inspired in part by Barnet Newmans work as an Abstract Expressionist . I saw his large blue paintings at the Royal Academy Exhibition a few years ago where they placed Jackson Pollock as the star of the show, but for me it was the Barnet Newman work that made me literally weak at the knees. It made me more acutely aware of the power of pure colour. My Grandad was a landscape painter and was appalled that abstract expressionism had become so popular as it did in the late 50s and early sixties...I remember him fuming, saying something like" they're just chuckin it all over the place, thats not Art " and worse things too, and he never went to see it for himself, but I was an impressionable young thing at the time. So after I was a grown man, I chucked the paint on and made a beautiful work of Art.

First I was a Painter, then I was a Painter again, now I am a painter again and again. Born in 1955 in Uxbridge ,England, I now live in central London and take many trips to Europe, the Middle East and India. On many journeys, the best moments stay in the mind even when they miss the camera, so photos are used only as a reference and are not copied as its the feeling rather than the actual that I convey in my painting which I do from my home based studio space.I have a long history of producing paintings, I still have my first large panel, signed 1974. Sadly, a lot of my work from the late 60s and 70s has been lost or suffered catastrophic destruction over the years, but I cannot help but produce new work, more or less whatever my circumstances.
