Disrupted Conformity is one of a series of 6 call “In the Machine”. The series explores aspects of the relationship we have with the cultural systems we are born in and inhabit. My focus was to express the sense we are imbued with the values and norms of these systems outside of conscious thought. I ask the question, what happens if we start to question such values and norms? Disrupted Conformity was inspired by the idea that when we question cultural norms we start to disrupt our uun questioning compliance with such conformity Painted on canvas with layers of collage and acrylic paint applied and scraped back combine with mark making. The surface is textured by the underlying layers. The picture is painted black on the sides and is sold unframed. It comes with hanging hardware.

Asking Questions I have long been fascinated by communication beyond words. With a long career in the psychological therapies and a passion for the visual image, I take a deep dive into finding expression in abstract form. My paintings are vibrant, rich, textured depictions of place and journey, both imagined and from experience. They are my intuitive response to transitory spaces between nature and human construction, between structure and fluidity and between growth and decay. Through the medium of paint, collage, print and mark making, I invite questions and conversations about our relationship with the environment each other and with ourselves. I enjoy walking in varied landscapes, which in turn, provides a powerful impetus for my creative process. I’m often making marks in sketchbooks as I walk, to register observations, sensations, movements, thoughts and feelings. I may take photographs that record a particular shape or pattern or help record the feel of an experince. Back in my studio in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, my sketchbooks and photography become springboards that start to explore ideas and possibilities on paper, canvas or wood panel. In this multiple layered process suggested avenues to follow reveal themselves, others are abandoned. My relationship with the work evolves as elements take shape, are concealed, scraped back and reworked. I have sold paintings to a number of private collectors and have also completed pictures on commission
