VIEW IN MY ROOM
In his series of paintings called “Window with Cat and Palm Tree”, Lewis explores borders and fulfillment. Color is key, as well as distilling a composition that lends itself to repetition, creating on the whole an interlinked series of images that enact different moods through variation in color and line. The unprimed cardboard (or hardboard) serves a significant role in the palette: the outlines of the figures are typically not painted; instead, everything else is, so that the tan color of the cardboard surface becomes like the grout in a mosaic. The catalyst for the series was Bill Traylor’s “Blue Cat,” also painted on a piece of cardboard, in 1939.
