About The Artwork

Sometimes a painting will start in the strangest place and lead to an utterly unexpected destination. That's especially true of this fearless little person. A few years back I was busy with a piece of a baobab tree, and in the tangle between the lower branches and undergrowth I noticed the suggestion of a little figure stepping away from the trunk. It was entirely accidental but I liked it enough to keep a record before continuing. Last year I came across this in my archives and thought it'd be fun to do a small oil sketch of it, which I did. The public response was immediate and enthusiastic, and it sold quickly. So I thought I'd do a bigger, more finished version for an upcoming show but that too sold before the show began, so I did one more version, this time larger still and with a bit more detail and colour. This is the result, somewhat off the usual range of my work, but obviously touching something alive and vibrant in the human psyche. The dimensions given include the unpainted 5cm surround. Instead of the usual canvas stretched across a timber frame it's simply been pulled across a sheet of marine ply. The idea behind the unpainted border was to allow for re-stretching across a traditional stretcher, but I rather like the effect as it is, allowing for hanging without further framing, so in the print version I'm leaving the border in. I deliberately kept the painted edges jagged, picking out the border with a loose line of dark paint. After shipping in a tube it can be re-stretched most easily across a matching sheet of 6mm marine ply or equivalent.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Art has been in my family for 3 generations, and in fact I still use the easel I inherited from my grandfather. As a child of around 5 my father bought my sister and I sketch pads and set up little still life arrangements for us to draw, so art is pretty much coded in. As an adult I was in the right time and place when CGI first came to SA in its most primitive early form (does anyone out there actually remember a 286 computer?!) and I rode that wave as it broke over the local broadcast and video scene, notching up some notable firsts and winning a pile of now forgotten awards. Eventually the forces of my life conspired to steer me to art proper, which is where you find me, now in my 11th year as a painter of pictures.
