About The Artwork

St Sebastian on the left is partially covered by the face of the "Man of Sorrows" after Fra Angelico, completed by a group of angels that we owe to Botticelli. Sebastian is a Christian martyr exposed to the arrows of his tormentors. In art since the Renaissance, he has become the model of the naked male body. He too is a sufferer, like Christ. This contrasts with the charm of the angelic faces, to which Botticelli lent an almost heavenly beauty. The terrible and the beautiful find expression in this overpainted collage, as is often the case in my works, and St Sebastian is known for his martyrdom; he was shot with arrows because of his faith. The depiction of Sebastian next to Christ could allude to the theme of suffering for faith and the redemption that followed.
