Harry Chandler’s Autopia series celebrates urban America by inviting the viewer to reconsider the familiar rivers of concrete and asphalt, which he has superimposed on mythical landscapes that recall our agrarian past. The series title “Autopia” speaks to an automobile-centric utopian vision while the works seduce us with their geometric patterns, challenge us with their juxtapositions of past and present, and invite us to imagine a future that may yet come to pass. To begin the creative process, Chandler photographs select interchanges from a slow-moving blimp or helicopter then digitally enhances them. He often added exotic cars, and in some cases changes the shapes and configurations of the freeway lanes. Suitably modified, the image were printed on watercolor paper then painted over using oil or acrylic. His expressive brushwork, shifting horizon lines, altered perspectives, and vibrant colors show the influence of Wayne Thiebaud’s Sacramento River Delta series, Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park works, and David Hockney's early Los Angeles landscapes. The original painting derives from an aerial photograph of the interchange of the Long Beach and Century freeways in Los Angeles that was mostly painted over with acrylic. This expressive urban landscape will enliven your walls.
