CHUTTI, a series of white ridges built up from the chin to either side of the cheek, is one unique deco feature in this classical dance form from Kerala, India. Placing the CHUTTI, on the cheek, comes as the second stage of the makeup process. Kathakali is a classical dance-drama form that originated in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It is characterized by its elaborate costumes, vibrant makeup, intricate hand gestures, facial expressions, and rhythmic footwork. Kathakali combines elements of dance, music, and acting to portray stories from Hindu epics, mythologies, and folklore. The performers, mostly male, undergo rigorous training to master the intricate movements, expressions, and gestures that are central to Kathakali. The facial makeup, called "CHUTTI," is highly stylized, with bold colors and exaggerated features to help portray various characters, such as gods, demons, heroes, and villains. Kathakali performances typically involve a combination of pure dance movements (adavus), expressive hand gestures (mudras), vocalized rhythms (solkattu), and powerful storytelling through dramatic facial expressions (rasa-abhinaya). The accompanying music includes traditional percussion instruments like chenda, maddalam, and chengila, as well as vocals and melodic instruments like the chengila and the shankha. The dancers' ability to convey complex emotions and narratives solely through physical expressions and movements is a hallmark of Kathakali. Each performance is a visually captivating spectacle that engages the audience with its grandeur, beauty, and emotive power. Kathakali is not only a revered art form in India but has also gained international recognition for its cultural significance and artistic excellence.
