Over the last 10 years I have dripped bitumen paint on to canvas, creating figures, and stories that hold a variety of conceptual meanings. 'Pretend to surrender' uses gesture to convey the emotion of resistance, even in the act of defeat. The layers of gesso and bitumen underneath the colour block of oil, lend a texture and depth to the kind of hubris of everyday culture. We are subjects to the performance of gendered subjectivity that we experience differently through out our lives.

Delpha Hudson has a studio in Bread St. Penzance, Cornwall. She is an alumni of Falmouth College of Art with an MA from Dartington College. She has always painted along side performance and film work that has been shown internationally and around the UK. She has had work commissioned for Tate St Ives and shows her paintings at many galleries around the country. Hudson has developed her own poetically resonant, and aesthetically individual studio style, using unusual materials like bitumen paint. Her work aims to present the self as fluid and transformative, and calls for a significant change in the way we value to women and carers in a post-COVID-19 world.
