“pink champagne” is the first painting by Soren Nellemann inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights” (c. 1503) and part of his 2019 graduation show "Eden Valley Orchard Co&Son (minus Daughter) . Upon immediate viewing of ‘pink champagne’ despite the festive title it appears as a clear imaginary of Hell on earth with the war ravaged landscape and smoke and pink pig with a blank (dead?) stare. However, upon closer view several other symbols and images emerges from the floating refugees, the bathing tourists, the Pepsi and Mcdonalds’ signs and persistence of major brands, to the popcorn (entertainment), yellow trucks entering the vagina of the baby creature symbolizing the future in peril, to the sparkling clean skulls next to the Ajax bottle symbolizing the ability to clean-up and forget, to the monkey nursing a human baby questioning our state of humanity today. Just maybe this is not Hell, but a reflection of our times? After all a glass of champagne and popcorn may make things right again. The perspective is one of the viewer staring into a landscape as a participating observer. It can be viewed at SBK Gallery in Amsterdam as part of the Best Dutch Art Graduates 2019.

I just graduated and was selected among the 31 best art graduates in Holland 2019 as a young talent (SBK Gallery). So my talent is raw and young, but I was born in Denmark in 1963 (ironically my mother's midwife was Madame Gauguin great-grand daughter of Gaugain, so how is that for a John Irving beginning). I drew and painted from very early on. In my younger years I made many comic strips/books and drew whatever I saw. Over the years I acquired further technical skills in Copenhagen, Paris and Washington D.C., but never received any formal training. I have lived in Paris, Dominican Republic, Washington D.C., Jakarta and now Moscow. Being a painter and writer is a direct step into the imaginary world and images wherever they come from and wherever the inspiration grows. For me it creeps through cracks and crevices everywhere. Art has a quality and should be made with quality like any craft, but it is ultimately a subjective and personal matter if you like it or not - and I don't judge others. I paint what I like - not for any specific market. My style and inspiration is most often found in the bizarre, abstract and beauty. I find beauty in every person and face I paint. My inspiration then jumps to the absurd, bizarre, dark and humorous, but all with an intend to evoke childhood memories, smells, emotions of happiness and tragedy. Anyone will notice my fascination with light, shadows and colors since they all evoke strong feelings. I have noticed that my style and inspiration has changed and keeps changing and I wonder whether it is a reflection of my own life and life experiences. I have a deep respect for the craftsmanship of the art and I have meticulously studied the painting technique of the great masters. Thus every painting is carefully prepared and developed. Therefore the number of paintings I make are also very limited. I have been told that my sculpting is what I should do more of. Sculpting is completely different from anything else and the most amazing experience is once the figures emerged out of a rock. Pretty wild and amazing.
