About The Artwork

Mask of a women demon. The Demonic expression of the mask is highlighted by disheveled hair, appearance of horns and round eyes. Additionally the womens face is reddened up to the eye level. This emphasizes the transformation, an intermediate state between the human world and Hannya word (world of demons). Namanari belongs to the lowest of three demon ranks. Classical Japanese dance theatre is the oldest major theatre art that is still regularly performed today. Noh was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Taken literally the word means "skill" or "talent". Most prominent feature of Noh are Masks which represent the character’s type. The first maks were carved some time during the Muromachi period (1336 to 1573) and are still being crafted to this day using the same templates. They are carved from blocks of Japanese cypress (檜 "hinoki"). Every mask represents a different character and conveys a set of emotions they experience during a play. There are approximately 450 different masks mostly based on sixty types, all of which have distinctive names. The reason to portray the masks in the triptych "NOH Masks" is my admiration of the fabrication perfection of each mask, as well as a wish to showcase the emotions that accompany the character's transformation.

I was born in 1965. I always been fascinated with Japanese art and culture, especially calligraphy, painting and theater. I visited Japan numerous times which shaped me as an artist. I met multiple times with some of the most prominent authors of Japanese art - both painters and sculptors. I have been able to study museum and gallery art collections and visit whole urban centers that are the cradle of Nippon’s culture. After coming back to Poland I created intensely in the spirit of Japanese Art. I collaborated with multiple publishers. I am the author of numerous pictures illustrating various books and albums. I pay particular attention to my craft by employing traditional Japanese painting techniques.
