About The Artwork

Minhwa (Korean folk art) is a painting painted by unknown painter wishing for hope among people long ago in Korea. I have reconstructed it in modern colour and style but the meaning of the content remains same. Such hope and wishes are shown in my paintings; a dragon meant to protect humans and a country, a phoenix comes out of the world only when the truth enlightened people, a jumping carp symbolise promotion or getting on in the world etc. I hope my paintings to trigger people to think of their childhood dreams again and conceive a positive hope.

Paintings are a means to communicate with the world to me and records of my growth like a diary. I have been working on the subject of 'What is a human' constantly, and now working on the inner world of human beings with interest. As the first theme, I wanted to express a craving for 'freedom' which is one of the human instincts and people living a life without vivid energy while adapting to the repressed circumstances that is already familiar with, by overlapping it with the ‘wings of flying bird’. Unhappiness could result from an economic pressure, a passive attitude to the power, excessive responsibility or an adaptation to an unequal relationship or the social structure. The helplessness may be caused by situations that make people hesitate though they want to fly vividly I would like to have a hopeful conversation about how beautiful each of them is. Though they look unhappy now with broken wings, I want to depict them in a break for a while to fly again. By looking at my painting, I hope them to rest calmly for a moment.
