About The Artwork

I was looking at early 20th century photographs of Royals and decided to make a work based on them. The two figures in the painting are cousins George V of England and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. The sunflowers painted between them were created in a completely stream of conscious way, I just needed something in the center of the painting to create a sense of balance. The painting is open to interpretation but most people who see it wonder about the relationship between the two men. The clock in the background could be seen as a symbol of mortality. The painting is now in a private collection but prints are available to buy.

James Lang (b.1987, London) currently lives and works in London having recently returned from Beijing after almost 5 years. He graduated from Liverpool School of Art in 2011 and Camberwell College of Art in 2013 with an MA in Illustration. Living in China was a transformative experience. The distance made him feel closer to the culture he left behind. This led to a series of works inspired by British history and culture. His paintings are inspired by medieval art, literature and a fondness for childhood cartoons and vintage colouring book images. The paintings are often thickly layered, ranging from brightly coloured pop art to blurry monochrome images, Varying in sentiment between innocence and satire.
