At the end of a day "As the busy commuters make haste for the train after another day of work in the 'big smoke', the fading sign on a building wall that depicts a smoking cat watches the scene from high above. " That what is left of the sign writing era adorns our walls and roof tops throughout the city and surrounding areas. Proud and steeped in history are the remains of these wonderful old signs that advertise products that are no longer available and companies that simply do not exist any more. Fractured and torn, weathered and worn. Over the years these beautiful old signs become something else, morphed lettering, ghostly images, all changing daily thanks to the affects of the sun, wind and rain. 'End of a day' is a work that captures a sign writers skill in handcrafted layout, design and paint application fused with the inspiration drawn from the essence of the ghostly, mysterious and magical signs that are left to remind us of a trade sadly now gone. This work is painted on 6mm ply, painted in rich sign writing acrylics and finished in a durable satin clear. The work is easily hung using two mounting wedges that are provided.

Originally schooled in Sign writing and later Scenic Art, in 2010 I began exploring and developing techniques in the treatments of typography by means of ( for example ) painting , sanding, masking and the overlaying of type and letter shapes. The original concept of my work was inspired by various weathered sign written signs I had seen mostly high up on the sides of buildings in Melbourne's CBD and also on walls of it's surrounding inner suburbs. It was around this time that I started developing more of an interest in vintage graphic design, package design and vintage typography, and whilst my explorations into letter treatment for the most part remained the same, the focus of my work broadened as I began to consider layout and design, spacial awareness and colour (and it's tones ). By implementing these new concepts and coupling them with my ongoing explorations into typography, I was able to lay the foundations of the style of work that would follow and which continues to be a feature of my work today.
