The Chedi of Dust consists of two elements. First are thousands of thumb-nail sized of photographs. From a distance, we may not realize that they are photographs. We scrutinize the mini photos up close and can find the faces of the unknown. They are the persons who one way or another were the characters of the Thai political history in the last 200 years. There are prime ministers, generals, protestors, prisoners, victims, women, men, heroes, and martyrs. Because of the miniature size, even well-known persons look unfamiliar. These mini portraits finally became the sea of the unknown, the left-out, the forgotten. The second element is a glass chedi (stupa). In Buddhism, chedi, or stupa, is a spiritual monument—a place of burial or a receptacle for religious objects. In this work, I put the mini photos in the stupa. I intend to use this glass stupa as a way to preserve the memory of the forgotten ones in history. This artwork is about politics and religion in Thailand. Having said that, I did not limit the work only to this decade or to Thailand. The Chedi of dust goes beyond a particular place and time. It aims to reach the truth of the history of violence throughout the world -- the truth that everyone is just a grain in the sand of time.

Prapat Jiwarangsan (b.1979,Bangkok) I am a visual artist from Thailand. I have a strong background in interdisciplinary art and research. I was trained in ceramics and glassmaking, but after studying at London's Royal College of Art, I have shifted my artistic practice to focus on fine arts. In my creative explorations, I usually incorporate a variety of media, especially photography and video, in order to investigate and represent the relationships between history, memory, and politics in Thailand—particularly in relation to the theme of migration. In the past four years, I have researched and developed a practice that explores the experience of migrant workers outside of their home countries. I see my work as a platform for artist, viewers and migrant workers to communicate and learn from each other. My installations have appeared in Bangkok, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Gwangju while my videos have screened at international film events such as Canada’s Images Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Experimenta India, and Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival. Between 2012 and 2015, I worked as a full time lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University. Currently, I am an independent artist, and I am based in Bangkok. http://www.prapat-jiwarangsan.com
