About The Artwork

This piece was one of the 36 individual artworks comprising my project “Just Like Clockwork” in 2015. The body of work was made up of 8 portraits (all using the same materials and style of realism) that each signified and indicated a specific “time” on the clock- with the entirety of the project revolving around the conceptualisation of the human life cycle to be comparable metaphorically to the physical and mechanical structure of the clock. From this viewpoint there were several key similarities that the metaphorical object of the clock embodied that were comparable in nature to that of the mortal human and aging process. By referring to each of the portraits as numbers/ times on a clock their significance and meaning to the viewer is easier to interpret as each portrait not aiming to represent an individual person but rather act as a point of reference giving a indication of the time lived versus time left; directing and connecting the concept of the lifespan of man to the predictable and cyclical nature of clockwork. This idea left the predictable “constants” of each clock number representing a particular age group increasing at each point and were depicted through eight different portraits whose consistent artistic style, practice and material use then provided the building blocks to better communicate the primary subject matter of the body of work which was not just comparing the life cycle of man to that of a clock, but exploring the ideas of how the aging brain deals and copes with the aging process and the inevitable mortality of the body it possesses.
