The inspiration behind this study is the work by Evelyn Chapman (1888-1961) of Australia. Chapman was a self-funded war artist during WWI. She was self-funded as the government wouldn't allow a woman to get into the service. She followed behind the front line on the Western Front and captured scenes of ruins with oil pastels. This work in particular was the ruin of a church in Villers-Bretonneux and was created in 1918-1919. I created this work as a remembrance of the devastation of war and the inequality of opportunity placed upon women historically. This work is also a study for a larger painting I created.
