Sutter's Mill is dedicated my great-great-great grandfather, George Washington Agard. In 1850 at the age of 30, he left Joliet, Ill. for the gold fields of California. He purchased several claims and found gold on one. He stayed for 3 years and returned home with $6,000. Sutter's Mill is a visceral organic piece of sculpture. The borings, texture, and color are reminders of the rough-cut earth-bound existence my ancestor endured mining gold. The inside of each boring is coated with gold paint. All of my sculptures are made out of wood (Cedar). They are intended to be placed in an interior environment only. My sculptures are photographed both inside & outside. The interior shots (White background) are intended to give the viewer a sense of what my work would look like in an interior setting. The exterior shots were important to give the viewer a more accurate sense of color and texture, and perfectly balanced natural light without unflattering shadows. I have always had an affinity for creating with wood. Over the years I've restored 10 properties. Several were historic. One is listed on the National Registry of Historic Structures. I've also built wooden boats. My career was dedicated to teaching studio art at three different colleges over a period of 44 years. I've exhibited in NYC, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Florence Italy, Liverpool England, and numerous museums and galleries throughout the US. Creating challenging provocative work has been a life long goal. I consider myself a process artist. My that I mean... I enjoy all aspects making the work. After that I basically leave it in the hands of the gods. Sutter's Mill is finished with three coats of steel impregnated paint, then sprayed with an activator... magically turning the surface in mud. Sutter's Mill comes with a 18" tall base. The base of the sculpture slides easily into the slotted base. The base is shipped seperately.
