Nude on a Pedestal Sculpture

The vertical portion is walnut. The base is oak. This was made over a long period of time. Originally I carved the walnut piece and I liked it. I even listed it for a while. But, it was awkward to display. You could lay it on its side, but that seemed a poor way to display it. Vertically it could not stand up on its own. I finally realized it needed a base, so I carved a nice piece of oak to fit the walnut portion. The finish is a proprietary mix of items, inspired from a blend of materials my mother used to make. The title of the piece comes from a certain viewpoint when observing the piece. It is obviously abstract, but that particular look is what inspired the title. The wood, itself, comes from my property. It was cut a long time ago and most of the walnut was used or taken by other family members. This particular piece sat for a long while in our barn and was finally rescued by me before we sold that barn. It then sat in my shop for a couple years before I got around to carving it. My process on these abstracts is to let the wood tell me what it needs to be. I generally follow certain lines or grain or form and remove what does not belong. What remains is what you see in the pictures. The date listed earlier is when it was finished. It's a beautiful piece and took a long while to make and finish. Several finishes were tried and then removed because I just didn't like them that much. The piece is signed and dated on the bottom. The dimensions are roughly 20 1/2 inches tall and the base is 6 by 5 inches.
