The colours of this latest ‘Djinn’ sculpture were inspired by classic racing cars like the Shelby Cobra. I wanted the colours to accentuate the sense of heat and velocity that the form represents. A Djinn is a spirit of air and fire, described in the Quran as a scorching wind. The word ‘Djinn’ originally meant ‘what is hidden’ - a concept I have tried to capture in the sculpture by creating a swirling column-like form that confuses the eye. The paintwork on this piece looks simple, but was very difficult and time-consuming to achieve. The piece was powder-coated white before I spent many hours masking off the areas to be left white, then painting the sculpture racing green. After removing the masking tape there were still many small areas I had to work on to ensure a perfect finish.

Working predominantly in metals, I create an eclectic range of sculpture and contemporary furniture. Highly aesthetic in nature, you will find much of my work curvaceous and tactile, but with a coarseness that is lent from working with bare steel or stainless steel. My style ranges from figurative to abstract and is always in context with its environment. My current collection "˜Elements' focuses on Earth, Air, Water and Fire, and describes the reaction of when those elements meet. Developing the collection I concentrated on the proccess of using repetitive form of material - flat steel bar, to generate concepts and capture the movement of elemental reactions. The forms are designed appropriately for indoor display, but are perfectly suited to larger scale and outside installations for private or public spaces. http://www.philipmelling.co.uk http://www.artquid.com/artist/philipmelling/philip-melling.html htt
