This conceptual art piece presents a thought-provoking juxtaposition of elements symbolizing the intersection of nature, humanity, and the evolution of societal norms around sexuality. At its core, a chimpanzee skull, not just a remnant of life but a symbol of our closest relatives in the natural world, is adorned with epoxied mushrooms and moss. This deliberate fusion of the skull with flora signifies the inevitable return to the earth and the cycle of life and death, while also hinting at the growth and decay inherent in natural and human-made systems. The skull is meticulously placed upon a train dinnerware plate from the 1950s, an item evoking a bygone era of luxury travel and the post-war American boom. This choice of pedestal serves as a time capsule, reflecting the period’s social norms, technological progress, and the stark contrast between what was considered the height of modernity and the primal, enduring elements of nature represented by the skull and its adornments. Beside this striking visual metaphor sits an early edition of “Human Sexuality in the Adult Male” by Dr. Alfred Kinsey, a groundbreaking work that challenged and expanded the contemporary understanding of human sexuality. The inclusion of Kinsey’s work underscores a dialogue between the past and present perspectives on sexuality, suggesting an ongoing evolution of thought that parallels the biological and societal evolution depicted by the other elements of the piece. Together, these components invite viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of human culture, our biological origins, and the natural world. It asks us to consider how our understanding of ourselves, both biologically and in terms of gender and sexuality, has evolved and continues to do so. This art piece is not merely an assembly of objects but a carefully curated conversation starter on the nature of humanity, the constructs of society, and the ever-changing landscape of sexual norms and identities.

Emotion is the driving force behind the work that I create. My paintings are reflective of the confusion, uncertainty, passion, seriousness, intimacy, and challenges as they manifest a range of emotions and experiences on the way to an expression of self. I view the practice of painting as a search. I use a diverse array of text, imagery and abstract painting elements as a visual communication style. Painting allows me to step beyond the bounds of language and expand consciousness and perhaps address what can only be expressed visually. There is a constant questioning in the work to find the validity or truth to what I am expressing. My paintings articulate the self through an accounting of personal memories, ironic phrases, self-deprecating humor, autobiographical stream of consciousness, pop culture references, ecstatic or drug induced fringe references, and importantly a kind of innate belief in the power of the art form. My studio is a clandestine laboratory where the focus of my work centers on the experimental use of materials and application of medium. My work is often edited over the course of days, weeks, months, and occasional years. Color, depth, and texture play an important role in helping me define the visual field of my work as I define personal emotion through painting. Non-traditional and non-art materials and processes, such as spray painting, photo transfer, collage, etc. are integrated with text and imagery. The finished work of art is found through an open-ended process where end result is somehow both truth and fiction, focusing on an embodiment of contradictory impulses.
