Nesting belongs to a series of works made in response to the notion of having to leave one’s home and place of security. The print and drawings were made in difficult times, following the constraints of Covid lockdowns to remain at home, then the Ukranian war, in which many women and children particularly have had to flee their homes, leaving almost everything in them. The drawing explores the building of a nest; the materials, form and structure of a possibly abandoned nest, and the viability of using straight lines to depict a circular form. Nesting is a gestural drawn drypoint, emotively capturing the process and furious activity of nest building. Image size: 18 x 18cm, paper size: 28 x 38cm.

Gillian Cooper is a multi-disciplinary artist from London, now living in Cornwall, whose work encompasses drawing, print and installation, Gillian's artwork excavates the intangible, what is hidden or often overlooked in the landscape. She is drawn to the everyday, found or domestic material, object or process, to natural history and natural phenomena. In her work she seeks to express a wonder at the capacity of ordinary things to act as poignant metaphors for deeply personal and collective experiences and emotions. When explored with her particularly stark, semi-figurative language of mark making, these subjects become subtle symbolic devices to point to the wider social and political issues of migration and wildlife extinction. Gillian's works are hand made, the most direct and tactile gestural expression. Even prints in a series contain slight variation, referencing difference, the hand-made gesture and that which is human.
