Tao Garden Photograph

In my editorial, I work with model Vivian and makeup artist Isabelle, and we shot at the Staten Island Chinese Scholar's Garden. It is an authentic Chinese garden built by Chinese craftsmen in the 90s, with all the wooden parts made in China and shipped to New York then put together. Same technique and craftsmanship are not even possible to retrieve now back in Mainland, and every step of construction was followed in ancient ways that no nails were even used in the architecture. We want to make an editorial that captures the essence of Tao and reimagines renowned warrior movies such as Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmaster. However, we also want to bring our vision with contemporary attires and attitudes, therefore we don't cater to the myth of Chinoiserie. The story is carried out with a controlled palette of black and white, and muted colors of wood and garden greens. With this color palette, we want to pay our tribute to the Ink Brush landscape paintings of Taoist poets, fitting into Summer theme with an Asian vibe.
