About The Artwork

Giclee print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308 gsm paper Archival quality Signed and numbered by artist. Who and where was I, within a changing landscape, that no longer bore the same markings, the visual associations, the triggers if one may that could instantly transport me to my 8 year old self, fretting over being late for school, the 16 year old one singing into the wee hours of the morning, till the cranky old aunty cussed at us, and also the 25 year old overworked one trudging home, reading the church quotations that corny as they were, still filled one with hope. What did it do to me / to us, when the dilapitated (haunted) house we crept into to give ourselves the shivers along with peals of hysterical laughter, was razed to the ground almost overnight, and a new snooker parlour took it’s place. When the cranky old aunty was suddenly no longer around and her house bore a metal board, corrugated sheets surrounding the mossy boundary wall displaying pictures of a fancy high rise… Why did it hurt that we never got to say goodbye, or even apologise for being so full of youth that her age was once, just something to mock. More and more structured disappeared, and it seemed as if the large holes in the once familiar landscape were within me as well. Till I saw my visual tapestry being stripped, I think I knew very little about loss. And what a strange loss it was, as none of these things - neither the mango tree that created the most beautiful dapple, or the shrine that always had candles around dusk, or the dilapidated circular stairway covered with the most delicate flowering vines, or the quaint houses with their peeling textural layers of paint, their sloping tiled roofs and stain glass windows were ever mine. What defines ‘mine’ ? And where is home, when everything familiar has gone.
