The starting point for this image was the Orthodox church dome in the background, which, because of its beautiful details and evocative form, I had been meaning to photograph for years. I never got around to it, though, until one day when I was driving by I saw it was surrounded by scaffolding and I knew I had to act quickly before the scaffolding was gone. I instantly felt the scaffolding added visual interest, with the delicate web of its straight lines doing battle with the massive curving shape of the dome; and narrative interest, with its suggestions of creation and repair. The title, Metropolis, doesn’t exactly refer to the modern meaning of the word, but owes more to the origin of the word in ancient Greek, meter polis, meaning “mother city”. Limited edition of 30 - signed and numbered on the print below the image and on an enclosed Certificate of Authenticity. Printed on Canson Platine Fibre Rag, an archival fine art paper. Image printed area: 12 x 16 inches. Total print size including white borders: 13 x 19 inches. It will be shipped rolled, securely inside a shipping tube.

After a decades-long career as a commercial photographer I’ve turned my hand to producing more personal imagery. In my work I strive to evoke emotional and psychological truths by creating enigmatic, dream-like scenes steeped in symbolism. They depict impossibilities, paradoxes, and incongruities, but all rendered with precise, seamless realism. I’m inspired by the Surrealists, as well as by Renaissance art. Ideas for my images are sparked in a number of different ways, and each evolves as I weave them together from the raw materials of my photos and my imagination. Experimenting with different combinations of image elements until they take on a life of their own, I then begin the exacting detail work of making the impossible seem believable Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, I have lived for many years with my beautiful and inspiring wife on a steep hill in San Francisco, near our children and grandchildren.
