Who would have known that time would be the main component for art? For the past thirty years I have been working exclusively with Polaroid film. “Grace and Truth” is an exploration of physical and metaphorical transformation. This is achieved both by chemicals ravaging the images and through time. One afternoon, while working in my studio, an accident occurred. I spilled chemicals on my Polaroid film. This caused what I thought to be severe damage to the Polaroids, so I threw them out. The next day I had second thoughts and retrieved them from the trash only to discover that something quite magical had happened to the surface of the film. I decided to put them away for safekeeping and forgot about them until seven years later. When I rediscovered them time had transformed the images dramatically. As time passed, the exposed in-camera images changed and new landscapes appeared. A new world emerged from the original stark black background. This newfound process allowed me to alter the original photographic images from one state to another. My desire is to create images that convey the passage of time and to transcend time through my work. The figures recede into the background, into another dimension of space and time. They are ghosts from another era. The integral component in the changing evolution of these images is time itself. Like a fossil unearthed, the images are fragmented and degraded. As with a fresco’s aging plaster, the imagination is forced to fill in the voids... *Other sizes available

Lisa Folino born 1958, Northridge California,United States. I have spent most of life as an artist and a musician. Photography was introduced to me at an early age by my father. I live and work as a fine art photographer in Newport Beach, California.Since the early 1990's I have been using Polaroid film/materials. Most of my photography involves experimentation and the alchemy of transformation. "Grace and Truth" is a series of images which took 7 years to transform through a chemical manipulation of the film. Like a fossil or a fresco, time has played an important role in the expression of this work. "Shadows and Light" explores the way in which we perceive reality through the still life. It is also a journey into our dreams. The portfolio "Prima Materia" is a complete degradation of the image. This reveals an abstract realty which exists below the surface of the photographic image."
