"White Girl" is part of a series of portraits of ordinary people, painted in costumes and adornments that evoke conventions and archetypes found in art history and popular culture but which also challenge cultural stereotypes of race, gender and sexuality. "White Girl" features a young white woman posing demurely in sunglasses and a blond afro wig. It is a nod to classical portraits of Royals such as Marie-Antoinette. It also refers to the appropriation of Black culture in our society.

Born in California, Mary Hayes has a BFA in Visual Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. She has had several solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in, Quebec, Canada and the United States, and is a recipient of grants from both Quebec and Canada Arts Councils. Hayes' work can be found in private and public collections, such as the Art Bank of the Canada Council, Loto Quebec, La Grande Bibliothèque du Québec and the Musée du Québec. Hayes lives and works in Montreal.
