About The Artwork

A heavy structured painting revealing african tribal art inspiration. A great inspiration is the ghanaian sculptor el Anatsui. The title of the work is borrowed from him. Gaining so much inspiration from folk art over the years, I have to mention the pacific tapa/capa made from palm leaves. Its raw texture tells much about life in the pacific region.

Brynjulf Jensvoll is a self-taught painter and sculptor since 14 years old. Eighteen years old he is working as a fisherman in northern Norway, and aged 22 he is leaving aside the arts to run his own vessel, At 29 years he returns to the artistic practise, and gets a 50 % position teaching arts. (From 2002-2010, secondary school.) He participates in a few collectives and has a major solo exhibition in Galleri Nordnorge before moving to Oslo in 2011. From 2017 he has been a full-time artist, living in Stokke, Sandefjord. 2025: July 31 - septemnber 6.: Solo exhibition, Senja Kunstforening 2023-24: November 30 - january 13.: Senjautstillinga, regional juried exhibition. August, 15. to november, 19: Sørlandsutstillingen. Juried exhibition covering the southern region of Norway. October: Solo exhibition, Harstad Kunstforening. Brynjulf is working in acrylic, oil and sculpture. His first interest was portraiture and drawing-based painting. Now his work shows a rare materiality due to inventive techniques. The striking textural qualities appeal to the tactile senses, and many viewers have felt the urge to touch, in wonder. The experimental approach is, according to himself, a quest to get closer to the matter. As he puts it: In my work, the matter is the one thing that matters. No matter the subject, I strive to get at the heart of the matter.
