The moment I came across photographer Olga Itina's photo of an Akhal-Teke named Myataji, I knew that it would make for a nice reference for a chiaroscuro, and that it would provide plenty of space for taking liberties with the composition. I also thought that by turning the horse into the sole subject (the photo was taken at a horse show) would help focus on his emotional state -- aroused, his attention set on something beyond our sight. I enjoyed painting this immensely, and felt afterwards that I had finally knocked down that "wall" I had had with acrylics! Many thanks to Olga, who kindly gave me permission to use her photos as reference.

Italy
Born in Rome and now based in Novara, Italy, Yasmine’s two greatest loves are horses and art – art in all its forms and horses in all their diverse colours, shapes and sizes. She views the horse-human relationship as a point of reference when considering humankind’s relation with the natural world, its complexity and contradictions. She did not attend art school, though she did successfully complete two distance learning courses on art history with the London Art College in the UK, under tutor Stewart Roberts. Learning the craft came mostly through trial-and-error, advice given by practicing artists, books -- her all-time favourite being "Animal Painting and Anatomy" by William Frank Calderon – and studying the work of the Old Masters. She mainly works in graphite, watercolour, and acrylics, and is always on the lookout for new creative avenues.
