About The Artwork

I live on a mountain in Upstate New York. Nearby is a fire lookout on top of another mountain. From that lookout one has a view 360 degrees--the Catskill Mountains and the Shawangunks (Gunks), the Berkshire Mountains, the Taconic Ridge and the Mount Washington State Forest. In my paintings I want the viewer to escape to these natural wonders. To feel the exhilation and relaxation of being surrounded by nature. In the past year I have been quarantined here in the country and have studied the patterns in the open and forest areas. These patterns are the inspiration for capturing these wide expansive views. These paintings have form a Lookout Landscape Series. This painting Upstate View is one of the views from the fire lookout.

I live and work in Dutchess County/the Hudson Valley/Upstate New York. Here I cannot escape--the landscape. This natural environment has deep connections for me: rivers, ponds, mountains, trails, wetlands, farmland, forests. I look for underlying geometry and order amid nature's chaos. I paint an imagined reality from a perceived experience. With charcoal, graphite and oil sticks while layering oils, I interpret through memory, imagination and atmospheric encounters with nature. Draw/erase. Paint/scrape. A ghost remains. With these traces I move the work toward the bilateral link between what I can see and what I can imagine. I translate both surface and subterranean geography to canvas and paper. The macrocosm and microcosm belong together. This combination casts the familiar in a new light.
