When women gather in private, secrets are shared. There's laughter and tears, joy and sorrow. They lean in and lift each other up. It's visible from a distance in their body language, their posture, the inclination or turn of a head, the touch of a hand or an embracing arm. I grew up in a family of women, attended an all girls' school, and treasure my female friends and friend groups. In my paintings, I'm often drawn to exploring women, the female form, and women's relationships with themselves, their emotions, nature, and with other women.Perhaps a kind of search for self. This painting is from my recent 'The women' series celebrating sisterhood. Whimsical, impressionistic, pieces observing women together from a distance. Why they are all dressed in the same colours and style of dress is anyone's guess. It reflects, I feel, a kind of unity between them, a non-competitiveness, which is often prevalent when women are amongst themselves in private. The pieces, the figures and 'scene', emerge as I paint. There's no plan. This particular piece reminded me of my early childhood travels in Mexico, Who is the central figure with the hat? She seems to stand in her power. An older sister, a friend, the mother? And the one on the right who looks a little shy? A younger sister perhaps? The two women on the left are clearly having a chit chat about something. What could they be talking about, I wonder!? With its red sunset background, is it symbolic of women basking in the completion of a cycle? Perhaps. There is warmth, strength, and love in the wonders of nature from the rosy dresses and the golden light from the right.

Visual and mixed media artist. I returned to painting after a long gap, after suffering a stroke a few years back. What started as art as therapy has become daily, joyful creative play inspired by colour and light, The interplay between words and images intrigues me and I'm fascinated by women - their emotions, connection with nature, relationships with themselves and other women. I'm currently working on a series called 'The women' which celebrates sisterhood. I also explore abstract floral and landscape art. Seeking beauty and sparking joy as part of my personal well-being journey. As Matisse once said, 'There are always flowers for those who want to see them.' Originally from the blueberry laden Atlantic shores of Canada, I now live in Sardinia with my husband (the poet farmer) and Violetta (the cat muse).
