About The Artwork

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, fabrics, and archival pigment prints (collage) on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. Peter Vahlefeld draws on the raw energy of expropriating commercial printed matter by ripping art magazines apart when crafting his mixed media works. For this painting he has mined an ad of Louis Vuitton (The Art of Travelling) which he has painted over. The overpainted ad has then been digitized and reworked on the computer, before it has been blown up as pigment prints and mounted on canvas. The image is literally brought to surface through calculated action as different varnishes and oil paint become thicker and more complex, trapping the colors and the evidence of the process under the surface, creating a depth of pictorial space and a sculptural three dimensionality.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions, art fairs, and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), and Sotheby's (Vienna). His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. Peter Vahlefeld was featured on the German television channel ZDF. He currently lives in Berlin.
