About The Artwork

The greatest inspiration for this painting are the works of dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. Influences can be seen in the subject matter, composition and 'mostly' dark symbols. Although the symbols are loaded with perdition, danger and evil, they often come with laughter. So, despite the dark side of the painting, there are a lot of laughable twists and a ray of hope from prosperity and resurrection. Struggle in vain reflects our time and shows the two meanings of vanity: on the one hand something that's vain, empty or valueless, and on the other hand excessive pride in one's appearance or accomplishments; conceit.

Sierk was born in Vlaardingen (the Netherlands) in 1982 and he now lives and works in Amsterdam. In 2007, he earned his B.F.A. from Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Throughout the years, his paintings have been displayed in galleries, museums, and art fairs. He creates mostly paintings, but also drawings, engravings, etchings, and collages. The main focus of the themes is our generation’s self-obsessed behavior and the consequences it entails. In recent years, there has been a greater interest and emphasis for science, which includes investigating laws that are not well-understood. Although, beauty and death are always present in the paintings. It is possible to observe various styles, including realism, baroque, classicism, surrealism, pop art, and magic realism. The old masters have been a source of inspiration for composition and technique. However, the subjects are a reflection of the present time.
