There is a walk in Hampshire which we did nearly every day whilst my children were growing up. It goes from the small village of Easton, along the River Itchen and back. There are two bridges - one in Martyr Worthy and one in Chilland. We called it the ‘short’ walk, and this view is from the jumping off bridge, though obviously not in Winter. The River Itchen is famously beautiful so it can be busy in Summer. In January it is cold enough for there to be noone about and I can sit and sketch. This is the view upstream. Trees overhanging and the sky a cold cloudy yellow which is reflected in the water. I don’t hang about to paint here but produce many sketches so that I can recreate the feeling of this place in the warmth of my studio.

In the past few years Caroline Hall has attracted media attention for shows at Liberty in London and CCA Galleries International in Jersey and has held a major retrospective spanning a decade of painting at one of the UK’s most prestigious public art galleries. Caroline Hall’s land and seascapes hover between figurative and abstract. They are informed by sketches she makes whilst walking, small snapshots of ideas that are transformed back in the studio. A pianist as well as a painter Caroline uses brush and palette knife to create carefully balanced compositions. But most of the music is in her use of colour. “ Colour is evasive, surprising and glorious. I can explore a colour palette for months in pursuit of a particular feeling because I want the viewer to experience what I experienced and I believe that is only possible by getting the colour right”.
