The name of this type of pottery: “The Wild Goat Style” is derived from the herds of goats and spotted deer grazing on this trefoil (three-spouted) pitcher. Dogs, birds and sphinxes and a floral element complete the patterns. Popular on the islands of Asia Minor (present-day Turkey) in the 7th and 6th centuries B.C., animals arranged in friezes often appeared in Greek art of this period. Wild Goat Pottery was produced on the island of Rhodes, Greece, and in workshops in the city of Miletus, Turkey. Before 500 BC, Miletus was the greatest Greek city in the east. Here, the vessel is transformed by a rainbow of colors, the animals trapped in history escaping into the wilds of a sea of gold.
