I drew this piece from life. I like to draw very freely, with loose lines and watercolor strokes. I started with charcoal and black ink which allow me to give very strong accents to my lines. In this drawing (and most of my drawings from life) I did not try to tell a story, as much as capturing the moment, the pose, the mood in a manner as free and lively as possible.

BIOGRAPHY Abstracted figurative sculptures and drawings are the main focus of Eric Saint Georges’ work. Eric was born in France. In 1978, after having completed his education in Electrical Engineering, a workshop with the sculptor Petrus triggered his passion for sculpture. He then went to study drawing and sculpture for a year at the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts” in Paris, before spending several months with Petrus, from whom he learned the foundation of his clay technique. However it is only in 2015 that he finally decided, after a 35 year engineering career, to go back to art full time. He works often from life, both for his drawings and his sculptures. He casts his sculpture in bronze, which is time consuming but very rewarding. Eric also loves to teach figure drawing and sculpture. Eric’s work is shown at the 10 West Gallery and the LCCCA (La Cumbre Center for Creative Art) Illuminations Gallery in Santa Barbara and the Seager-Gray Gallery in Mill Valley (CA). Eric lives with his wife in Santa Barbara and is always happy to welcome visitors in his studio. ARTIST STATEMENT I watch the model, feeling the tension of her movements in my own body. With my knife, I carve bold cuts into the block of clay, striving to capture the essence of the pose. I work quickly to keep the energy flowing... I draw swift lines and add splashes of watercolor, remaining fully focused on the model, enjoying the freedom of my hand moving across the paper. My goal, whether working with clay or drawing, is to convey the raw energy of the moment, and to allow my work to reflect the depths of my inner self rather than to conform to any preconceived notions of what it should look like. I intentionally leave the marks of my tools on the clay and the extra loose lines in my drawings. These are witnesses to my process and experience, creating a stronger connection between the viewer and my work. However, different material lead me to different goals. With my steel sculptures, I am seeking aesthetically pure forms. When reworking my drawings with acrylic, I am exploring the tension that arises from superposing geometric shapes of paint on top of the organic shapes of my loose lines. When it comes to my stone or wood sculptures, I prefer to create polished and curved forms that showcase the beauty and the unique qualities of the material I am working with.
